Then Adam made a confession of acceptance.
~Genesis 2:23~And Adam said, This is now [When? NOW!] bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman.~
When this declaration of acceptance was made, a divine miracle took place. Two individuals were made "one flesh" by God. This is confirmed by Malachi when he stated that God was pleased with the Jewish people because they had "dealt treacherously" with their wives.
~Malachi 2:14~Yet is she thy companion, and the wife of
thy covenant.~
Back in
Genesis chapter 2, Adam
verbally received Eve as his helpmeet, and
God made the "one flesh." Don't miss this truth; don't take it lightly. This vow or act of acceptance by Adam is vital if we are to understand God's basis and process of uniting two persons in marriage.
~Genesis 2:24~ says,
"Therefore..." [When it says
"therefore," find out what it is there for.] A transaction just took place here between Adam, and Eve, and God. The
end result of that verbal transaction is explained.
~Genesis 2:24~Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and
they shall be one flesh.~
God divinely
originated and
established the
institution of marriage, and made Adam and Eve "one flesh" by a
declared intention, or vow, by Adam. There was no government official, no pastor, priest, or rabbi. It was
a sovereign act of God.
Today a minister, a justice of the peace, or notary public will say, "Forasmuch as you ______ and______, have consented [mutually agree] together, and have committed your faith to each other [covenanted or vowed]
in the presence of God and these witnesses, and have confirmed the same by giving and receiving rings, and joining hands....I therefore
pronounce you [not join you, but
pronounce you] husband and wife."
Upon what Authority is another person able to say this? Only upon the authority that
the vows were made. This authority is based upon God's Word in
~Genesis 2~.
~Mark 10:6-9~But from the beginning of the creation
God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are
no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore
God hath joined together, let no man [no judge, no lawyer, no person] put asunder.~
NOTE SEVERAL THINGS:
1st.The verbal confession which was spoken by Adam in the garden and reaffirmed by Jesus'/Yeshua' Christ resulted in a
"one flesh" relationship.
2nd.THe act of making them
"one flesh" was an act of God, not man.
~Mark 10:7~For this cause shall a man
leave his father and mother, and
cleave to his wife.
The word
"cleave" in the Greek is
proskollaomai and means to be cemented, glued, or joined fast to, thus implying a
relationship of permanency.
~Mark 10:9~What therefore God hath
joined [literally
yoked together...
3rd. It was a
permanent gluing [joining or yoking].
~Mark 10:9~...let no man put asunder.
It's interesting how the Living Bible brings out the force of the Greek even more strongly.
~Mark 10:9~(Living Bible)~...no man may separate what God has joined together.
God Almighty, Himself, who
originated marriage and established the rules by which it was to operate,
created the first union with Adam and Eve. Only God can create a "one flesh" relationship between two persons. Know further that this "one flesh" condition is created
through the making of a vow, and is called covenant for life; which can only be broken by the physical death of one of the partners. Any offspring of Adam who has become a part of such a covenant must understand this and realize that either partner can violate this covenant repeatedly but it is scripturally important to break it.
God's Word teaches that marriage between one man and one women is a declared institution till death do them part Amen!
